The 2017 Water Science and Engineering (WSE) Editorial Board Meeting was held

The 2017 Water Science and Engineering (WSE) Editorial Board Meeting was held on October 18, 2017 at Hohai University.

Prof. Weiya Xu, Vice-President of Hohai University and Associate Editor of WSE, attended the meeting and addressed the opening ceremony. Prof. Zhongbo Yu, Executive Editor-in-Chief of WSE and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Hydrology-Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering, chaired the meeting. The WSE Editorial Board members, Director of Hohai Periodical Press, and WSE Editorial staff attended the meeting. Participants also included Prof. Dennise Lettenmaier, a fellow of US Academy of Engineering, UCLA, USA, Prof. Andras Szollosi-Nagy, Chair of Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological Programme, UNESCO, and experts from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and Desert Research Institute.

At the meeting, the WSE Editorial Board members put forward valuable recommendations for the journal’s future development, and the experts from all over the world shared their thoughts and practices on the operation of international journals. They suggested that the journal’s global visibility should be increased by focusing on thematic issues related to major water projects and social events, associating with other organizations to provide more free accesses to the journal, and seeking more opportunities for journal advertizing at international conferences. They also considered it a good way of highlighting the journal’s features by publishing special issues. Such special issues could be organized through discussion at special meetings regularly held with certain topics. In addition, they put forward detailed constructive plans and advice for upgrading the journal, such as shortening the turn-around time of papers, re-organizing the Editorial Board to make it more efficient, giving full play to the role of Associate Editors, and holding Editorial Board conferences once a year for discussion of journal issues.

All of these suggestions will provide references for WSE’s development in the future.
